The number of reported telephone scams has increased significantly in 2020. Here are some tips to help identify possible scammers and limit the number of scam calls you end up answering.
Common Scams
- Government agency demanding immediate action.
- Bank alerts requesting personal information over the phone.
- Free cruise or vacation offers.
- Free medical test kits or treatments.
- Debt relief or credit repair.
Unknown Callers
Don’t Pick Up! A legitimate caller would leave a voicemail or send a text; answering spam calls increases your chances of receiving even more.
- Search the web for the number with the word “scam” to see if anyone else has reported it.
- If it sounds like someone asking “Can you hear me?” do not respond!
- A recorded “yes” can be skewed to seem as if you agreed to a charge or purchase.
- Never provide personal information over the phone.
Call Spoofing
This is when scammers will make it look like they’re calling from either a recognized number, or one within your area code to seem like it’s a local call.
Reporting Unwanted Calls
Telephone Scams
File a complaint with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) on their website.
Sales Calls & Robocalls
Sign up for the National Do Not Call Registry. If you continue to get calls after you’ve been on the list for 31 days, there’s a good chance it’s a scammer.
Call Spoofing
Should also be reported to the FCC at consumercomplaints.fcc.gov
Blocking Scammers
There are many apps and features with your wireless provider to block annoying spam calls.
Your Wireless Carrier
Check with your wireless provider as they may provide a blocking service; some carriers can automatically change the caller ID to “Potential Spam” when you receive questionable calls.
On Your Cell Phone
Many smartphones have settings that can block calls from numbers you’ve never contacted before. Keep in mind, this setting may also block legitimate people from getting in touch if they are calling for the first time.
Apps That Block Spam and Robocalls*
For little, or sometimes no cost, you can use apps to block spam calls and messages. Some popular apps include Hiya, Nomorobo, YouMail Voicemail & Spam Block and Truecaller.
* Independently research the suitability or trustworthiness of any app before installing them on your device(s).
